Summer is here and memories of how I spent my childhood summers always come rushing back as the days get longer and the weather gets warmer. When I was a child, our family had a houseboat. We spent more time on the water and at the beach than we did at home on the weekends so my love for the sea runs deep.
My family and I often spent weekends on the boat with my aunt, uncle and cousins, and one of the best things about spending the night on the houseboat was the grocery store trip before leaving the marina to stock the galley cabinets. The kids got to choose the snacks and treats, and cookies were always a favorite item when we were out on the water.
I still have photos, our old ship’s log, and navigation charts that we used to navigate the waters to our favorite beaches. My cousin and I would read Archie comics as we motored over to the barrier island we loved so much.
Walking the cookie aisle at Kroger recently reminded me of the fun we had choosing treats and snacks for our weekend excursions. One of my current favorite cookies are the Fudge Shoppe® Fudge Covered Coconut Dreams. The taste of coconuts reminds me of time spent walking on the beach looking for treasures, and the fudge reminds me of the chocolate covered donuts we would eat for breakfast on every trip. So I decided to make some Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Coconut Dream Truffles to share with my son as I pour over photographs and our old ship’s log from our days on the boat, recalling stories of times spent on the boat.
Summer is a time of nostalgia for me and I always end up with the same conclusion: What’s old is cool again! What are some of your favorite summer memories?
