Valentines Day Tablescape

Valentine’s day is one of my favorite holidays to celebrate with my girls or my family.  I love all the sweet notions that flutter about this time of year and I always look for ways to celebrate all the moments, big and small.  Memories made will last forever.

So whenever we have our Sunday Supper and it happens to fall around a holiday or something fun to celebrate, I look for easy ways to add a few festive touches to our normal table setting.

I think the key to an impressive tablescape is simply layers. The formula is the same regardless of the event and regardless of how many guests you are hosting. If you follow this basic formula, you will have a table to wow every time.

When planning your table, start with a tablecloth or some kind of covering. My secret tip for getting the color I want is to use a base tablecloth and then overlay it with a sheer runner or tablecloth in another color to allow the 2 colors to blend into a unique color.  I used a light pink tablecloth with a coral chiffon overlay.

Then it’s time to layer your place settings.  Start with charger plates, add dinner plates, next dessert plates (don’t be afraid to use fun paper plates that are themed to your occasion!) and finish it off with cutlery, glassware, and napkins.

For a centerpiece or added table decor, think outside the floral arrangement and shop the party aisles at the store. Honeycomb decorations take up space and provide texture and interest and they are very inexpensive! Scatter themed items around like acrylic table scatter, or even game pieces.  The acrylic hearts and X’s I used on this table are from a tic tac toe game I bought. A garland laid flat on your table is another great accent to pull your theme together and provide visual interest to your entire tablescape.

Watch the video above to see how I used all of these items to layer my table into a fun setting that everyone will enjoy!

pro tips for planning your party

3 WEEKS OUT: Pick a date for your party and determine your guest list. It’s always a good idea to check with your guests to be sure most of them are available for your date. Now is the time to order any party supplies and decor items that will need to be shipped to you.

2 WEEKS OUT: Print and mail out your invitations. Guests still love getting a physical invitation to your party. If you choose to go paperless, use an image of your custom invitation to text or upload it to an online invitation service to track your RSVP’s.

ONE WEEK OUT: Download any printable files and cut them out and assemble. Having your party supplies ready before your party day will allow you to include these custom touches without rushing to get them done.

TWO DAYS BEFORE YOUR PARTY: Set up as much of your decor as you can. I like to use this time to fuss over the details. Create your party but wait to add any food, flowers or balloons.

ONE DAY BEFORE THE YOUR PARTY: Purchase all of your food and any flowers or balloons that you are going to use. Prep any recipes that can be made ahead of time to save effort on the day of your party.

PARTY DAY! Do any final touches to your party decor and create all of your remaining menu items today. Try to coordinate your cook times so that you will finish just before your guests arrive. My dad says the key to a great party is everything hitting the table at the same time and still hot! 🙂  Be sure to take lots of pics to remember what a great time you all had and most of all, HAVE FUN!
